STARTALK 2011: Integration of Assessment in Lesson Planning for Arabic Teaching

Since 2007 as part of STARTALK, CLASSRoad has been providing professional development programs dedicated to the teaching of Arabic as a Foreign Language. O N L I N E workshops provide lectures from some of the best experts in the field of Arabic teaching. O N S I T E workshop: 20 participants from the online workshop will have the option to join us in sunny California for a one week onsite training, which is part of a unique immersion program for Arabic learners at California State University - San Bernardino. $300 stipend plus room and board. ONLINE Part I - (April 25 - May 13, 2011)
The first part is a three-week online course in which participants take a self paced online module consisting of videos, quizzes, asynchronous forum discussions that introduce various instructional strategies and methodologies about teaching Arabic as a foreign language. This is a prerequisite workshop to the Online Part II.
ONLINE Part II - (May 23 - June 10, 2011)
This second part of the workshop will present various material and presentations by experts in the field of Arabic teaching who will be sharing the best practices in Integration of Assessment in Lesson Planning for Arabic Teaching. The focus of the Part II session will be on developing a lesson plan which integrates assessment strategies. The lesson plans will be uploaded online and participants will be able to provide one another feedback on each other's lesson plans. Participants will also engage in online discussions with their peers and our online master teacher and academic director, Dr. Dany Doueiri, to fine tune the lesson plan.

Gain knowledge of indicators, activities, and how students learn. What is meant by "indicators" or "evidence" of language learning in the classroom and how does this impact regular lesson planning in teaching Arabic? |

Learn about structuring activities for different communicative modes to find evidence of language learning: Presentational mode, Communicative mode and Interpretive mode: How to structure activities that allow students to show what they have learned through the three modes. |

Gain valuable insights in lesson planning: What is the link between assessment and planning? How are assessment and planning part of good instruction? What are ways to draw from assessment for lesson planning? |
ONSITE Part III - (August I - August 6, 2011)
Twenty participants from part two will be invited to California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) to participate in the third part of the program conducted by Dr. Muhammad Eissa: a one-week long onsite program, co-located with CSUSB's students' summer immersion residential program. The onsite module will focus on hands-on experience, as well as providing an opportunity for in-depth discussion of best practices in teaching Arabic as a foreign language.

Service Credit
Based on successful completion of course requirement (Passing grade: 70%), participants will have the option of receiving service credit from CSUSB's College of Extended Learning.
The online workshop qualifies for 4 credit hours and the onsite workshop qualifies for an additional 4 credit hours.
The participants are expected to cover their own cost of receiving the Service Learning Credit ($70/credit hour).

many times can I view course content?
- Course content can be viewed as many times as you would like.
- How
many times can I take the Quiz?
- You can only take the quiz once and the results are recorded for assessment. Once you have taken the quiz the system will display the correct response to any wrong answer.
- What happens if I log out or stop taking in the middle of the course or quiz?
- You can log out of the course at any time. However each time you log out and log back in you will need to navigate through the course to get to where you left off.
- Quizzes should be completed in one session. Any extended break in activity while taking the quiz might cause problems with scoring of the quiz.
