Dr. Mahdi Alosh د. مهدي العش
Ph.D

Mahdi Alosh is Professor of Arabic and Applied Linguistics and Associate Dean at the United States Military Academy.  He is an oral proficiency tester of Arabic certified by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and is tester trainer for the same organization. 

He is grant proposal evaluator for the Departments of Education and Defense and is consultant to several universities nationally and internationally. He worked with two other colleagues on developing the Professional Standards for Teachers of Arabic (2003) and is the chair of the Task Force that developed K-16 Learning Standards for Arabic. He is PI of a grant by the Department of State sponsoring exchange visits by Ohio State University and Damascus University faculty. For three years, he supervised the overseas part of the federally funded Arabic Flagship Program and conducted regular teacher training workshops at the University of Damascus and assessed the proficiency of the Flagship fellows.

He obtained his B.A. degree in English language and literature from the University of Damascus, his M.A. in linguistics from Ohio University, and his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in foreign language education. He is the author of Ahlan wa Sahlan for Intermediate Learners (Yale 2006), Using Arabic (Cambridge 2005), Ahlan wa Sahlan for Beginners (Yale University Press, 2000), and Learner, Text, Context in Foreign Language Acquisition: An Arabic Perspective (1997), and Speak and Read Essential Arabic I (Eastern) (Heinle Enterprises, Inc. 1991 and Simon and Schuster 2002). He has read many papers at national conferences and published several book reviews, articles, and book chapters on Arabic and foreign language pedagogy.
